Buying vehicles from retail car dealerships, so called wholesale car lots, public or online auctions and the like is becoming a thing of the past for savvy people. Car manufactures, dealers and their finance companies continue to exhaust promotional ideas to sell cars, but none of them are addressing the real problem their customers are experiencing. In fact, their promotions continue to burden their customers with overwhelming debt and cause them to experience massive loses.

 

To me, it's like coming up with great promotions to sell cigarettes knowing that chances are, they could kill you. Years ago when my father bought cars, the banks would not allow you to get a 4 year (48 month) loan on a car unless you had approx 20% to put down on the car.  Why?  Because they knew the car depreciated / lost value faster than the loan.  If you stopped making payments and the bank had to recover the car and sell it, they were less likely to incur a loss. Today, it's not uncommon for people with good credit to be able to finance new and used cars with little or nothing down and for as long as 6-7 years, while cars depreciate even faster than they used to. It should be no surprise that most people who own a car, not only owe more on it than it's actually worth, but with financing, up sales, extra fees and services it's costing them a whole lot more than they realize. Like all good things that come to an end, at some point, everyone is going to have to correct their deficiencies from their past car deals to get even again. 

 

Unfortunately, the car dealers' solution is one that creates even more debt. We teach our children that everything we do has consequences, good and bad. We stress to them that they need to be aware of these consequences in order to make decisions they can live with and commitments they can keep. Is what it is really costing us to own a car any different? It really is our responsibility to know what our decisions are actually costing us. That being said, when retail car dealership started knowingly putting people upside-down in the cars, they had to realize it's only a matter of time before a major correction needs to be made. In my opinion, they have created the environment that will eventually cause their own financial death.
